There are two common mistakes that many people make with house-training. One mistake is not to monitor water. If you take your pup out and she pees but takes a big drink of water when you come back into the house and you donât notice, sheâs going to pee again very soon. This is why supervision is so critical. You need to know exactly whatâs going into your puppyâand whenâso you can take advantage of the times she probably has to go and get her in the right spot to do her business. You can either watch her all the time or donât leave water down all the time. Offer water at minimum with meals. You can also leave it out whenever you prefer during the day, but only give the amount youâre comfortable with. Donât let your puppy drain the whole water bowl. Her bladder can only process so much at one time and sheâll end up having to go every 20 minutes for an hour or so.
The second big mistake people make is bringing their puppy back inside before she has peed. For example, you may take your dog out when itâs time but she doesnât go right away. You might shrug your shoulders, thinking that she must not have to go, and then bring her inside where she promptly pees on the floor. The problem here is that, yes, your dog did have to go, but once outside, she got distracted by a butterfly or a blowing leaf and forgot why she went out there. When she got back inside without the distractions, she realized, âOh yeah, Iâve got to pee.â To combat this, every time your puppy doesnât go outside, send her right to crate.
Remember, youâre not punishing her. Give your puppy her favorite bone or a stuffed Kong to make her feel happy. Bring her outside again in 15 to 30 minutes and keep repeating this process until she eventually pees outside. Then give her supervised free time.
